The site of the Bishop of Winchester’s palace was excavated in the late 1980s and revealed the extensive remains of a medieval 12th century palace. Built largely by Bishop Gifford and Henry of Blois to accommodate the Bishop and his retinue, the site also functioned as a court, a fortress and a luxury hotel to accommodate royal visitors.
