A major restoration programme was completed in May 2022 at the Old Grammar School in the village of Bampton, Oxfordshire.
The building is home to Bampton Community Archive and Bampton Library and with the restoration we have been able to open a wonderful upstairs space which has been inaccessible since 1961.
The Bampton Community Archive has been fundraising for the restoration project for 10 years and raised an amazing £400,000. We were able to complete the restoration of the roof in 2017 and with the help of grants from WODC and OCC, we have now been able to complete the whole project to open up the beautiful upstairs room, the Lewington Room, provide a state-of-the-art library and to restore the Robert Vesey Room, where we run exhibitions and a unique shop. All the profits from the shop go to support the Archive and Library.
Our aims are to support culture and creativity in the village and we are creating a fantastic community facility known as Bampton Community Hub. We are planning an ambitious programme of talks, workshops, events and exhibitions which will be low cost or no cost to make sure we can engage the whole community and visitors.
As our physical display place is limited, we plan to further develop our digital archive. With the introduction of some of the latest touch screen technology and audio/visual equipment this will open up access to the archive and give us the tools we need to continue to record, preserve and share the history of Bampton and the local community.
