Churchill and Sarsden Heritage Centre

The Centre is in the chancel of the medieval church which is all that remains of the original building. It is in a delightful setting, overlooking the Swail Brook valley and the ‘lost’ village’ destroyed by fire in 1684.

The building may be only 15′ by 30′ but its ancient walls contain state of the art technology, with touch screens telling the remarkable stories of two eminent sons of the village, Warren Hastings (1732-1818), the first Governor General of India, and William Smith (1769-1839), Father of English Geology, and the part played in the community by the village squire, James Langston (1796-1863).

Every year there is a special exhibition on a relevant local topic – please see the website (www.churchillheritage.org.uk) for details. There is also a wealth of archive material available for local and family historians – including census records, parish registers, photographs and maps.
