Housed in the former Magistrates Court and staffed entirely by volunteers, the museum tells the story of Thame. Displays, represent over 5000 years of history, from Neolithic finds from a recent archaeological dig in Thame, to an early Saxon burial urn excavated by the Victorians, right through to the modern day.
A must-see room is the Elizabethan wall paintings room. A rare survivor of a wall painting from the time of Elizabeth I, it is installed in a setting which re-imagines the house of the Elizabethan merchant in Thame High Street, where the paintings were originally discovered.
Several years ago, some of the older people of Thame were invited to record their memories which were compiled into a series of fascinating recordings. They contain significant insights into Thame’s more recent past – told by the people who experienced the times. Over 40 people were interviewed, some were in their nineties when the recordings were made. Sadly, several of these people have since died, but their memories can still be listened to and appreciated. The Museum also has a large photographic collection, copies of which can be purchased. It provides an intriguing overview of Thame’s history.
In addition to the permanent galleries the museum has a programme of entertaining and informative exhibitions and monthly talks. Facilities for local history and family history are also available.
There is a thriving Museum shop, (also available online) displaying local crafts, jewellery and books.
